From Story County Watchman March 29, 1889

The funeral of Dr. A. S. Welch for many years president of the Iowa Agricultural college, occured on the 21st inst. at the college chapel at Ames, and was attended by hosts of the friends of the deceased and his estimable family. Many of the state officers and prominent people from various parts of the state, who had been more or less intimately associated with Dr. Welch were present, joining with the alumni of the college and its present students in the last sad rites. Mrs. Welch, her son William Welch and her daughter, Mrs. A. B. Shaw of Corning, were the immediate family mourners. It was in the chapel from the rostrum of which Dr. Welch had so often spoken words of wisdom and kindly counsel to the young under his tuition, that the funeral address was delivered by Professor W. H. Wynn, who spoke most eloquently and lovingly of the departed. The pall bearers were Governor Larrabee, W. D. Lucas, Des Moines; J. K. Macomber, Des Moines; Professor M. Stalker of the college; Professor E. M. Stanton of the college; Joseph Dysart, Dysart; J. B. Hungerford, Carroll; D. A. Bigelow, Ames. The interment was in the beautiful college cemetery north of the grounds.
