From Story County Watchman April 26, 1889
About midnight Saturday night Mrs. Mary A. Smith, wife of J. H. Smith, a prominent merchant of Eldora, was run over and instantly killed by the cars at Marshalltown, Iowa. Havng just alighted from the passenger train on their return from Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Smith attempted to pass between gap of a freight train that was being made up on a side track of the Chicago & Northwestern road. It seems they did not notice the gap was being closed. Mr. Smith passed through safely, but Mrs. Smith was caught between the bumpers, badly crushed she fell to the ground, both limbs were run over and her head horribly mangled.
