From Story County Watchman July 27, 1888

On Wednesday morning John Scott, of Roland died at his residence. The remains were brought to this point for interment. He has been in charge of the local work at that point for the Boardman Bros. He was a trusty and competent person. His many friends here will be grieved at his untimely death.

On the same page:

DIED.--At his home in Roland, Iowa, on the morning of the 25th instant, John Hughes Scott, aged 53 years. He had been a resident of this county for about eighteen years, during whigh time he had made many friends by his modest merit, and had won for himself a name excelled by none for integrity and industry.

He was born near Mansfield, Ohio, in 1835. His father was an older brother of Hon. Josiah Scott, long a judge of the Supreme Court of Ohio, and his mother was a sister of the distinguished Iowa Surgeon, the late Dr. J. C. Hughes, of Keokuk. He inherited a sound mind in a sound body. His constitution was undermined to some extent by exposure in the army, and later by residence for a time in a malarious district in Southern Illinois. But he never lost his courage, and for more than twenty years he fought bravely for such rewards of honest toil as would give his family more than the mere common comforts of life. Silent and uncomplaining heroism during all this time was the feauture of his life. He loved labor and privation for himself if they would give pleasure to those dependent upon him.

The loss of his only son, by an unfortunate casualty, a few weeks since, was a severe blow to him, and doubtless shortened his life. His death was also made more sad by the serious illness of his eldest daughter, who was unable to attend his funeral. Under all their sad circumstances the community manifested a kindly sympathy by a very large attendance upon the last rites bestowed upon his remains, in our beautiful cemetery, on yesterday.
