This article was originally printed October 26, 1864 in the Story County Aegis and was reprinted in the Story County Watchman September 3, 1886 under the heading "Story County in Times Past."

The paper also gives an account of the finding of the body of a murdered man on the Thursday preceding. The body had been discovered partially buried in or near the west Indian Creek, not more than 20 rods from the village limits. "He was accidentally discovered by John Hammond while hunting ducks along the creek." "The exact place where the foul murder was committed is at the foot of the ravine north of Mr. S. E. Briggs' farm and the body was buried almost in the bed of the creek."
