DIED:--At his residence in Nevada on Monday noon, April 13th, 1885, A. O. Abbott aged about 51 years.
Mr. Abbott ws born in Portageville, N. Y. He was married to Miss Mary L. Hutchinson, at Pavillion, N. Y., on the 25th of April, 1857. He enlisted in the 130th, N. Y., afterwards known as the 1st New York Dragoons, and was with them in many of their severe marches and fighting. He was captured at the battle of the Wilderness and spent 10 months in Libbie and other prisons. After being released from there he wrote a book detailing the horrible sufferings there entailed upon his associates and himself, with many illustrations, making it much more vivid. He remained in the service until the close of the war when he was discharged. In 1867 he went to Chicago and began work for a clothing house, and for whom he worked some sixteen years. During this time his family moved to Cedar Falls, and in May, 1883, he moved to Nevada and began the clothing business for himself, and in which he was engaged at the time of his death. He had been ailing for years, but nothing serious until some time since, and since September has not been able to pay strict attention to business. Since January he had been confined to his house, and on Saturday last word was received that the end was very near. He died at 12 m., on Monday, Tuesday afternoon comrades of the G. A. R. Post of Nevada assembled at their hall and escorted the remains to the depot and seen them off on the train for Cedar Falls, where they have now been laid at rest. Brief services were held at the house before leaving. He leaves a widow and two sons to look forward to a uniting in the region beyond the sea of time, where no partings shall occur.
He was a thorough Christian, an enthusiastic worker in the Sunday School, and an honorable, upright man in whatever place you may have found him. In his loss the community, as well as his family, have lost one that will be missed and one that could ill be spared.
