Story City Herald: "Yesterday we were informed of a sad and fatal accident that happedned about two weeks ago to Joseph B. Bates, son of Mathew Bates of this neighborhood. Mr. Joseph Bates for several weeks past has been a resident of Ft. Dodge, and a couple weeks ago was thrown from a horse and killed. From what we can learn Mr. Bates was trying to ride a vicous bulky horse, which was harnessed, and the horse rearing up in the air threw the rider off onto the frozen ground, crushing his skull. Mr. Bates was a young man 27 years of age, was married about a year ago, and leaves a wife and one child besides a large number of friends to mourn his untimely demise. The body was interred in the cemetry at Ft. Dodge, but the father, Mathew Bates, has made arrangements to have the body disinterrd and brought home for final burial. The body will arrive to-morrow, and a funeral sermon will be preached on Sunday by Rev. Evans at Sheffield school house at 12 o'clock, a. m.
