From Story County Watchman July 14, 1882

DIED--In Nevada, Monday, July 10th, '82, David L. Stephens, in his 48th year of cancer, after a lingering illness.

Mr. Stephens was born at Frankford Springs, Pa., and came to this place in an early day, and has been one of our prominent citizens from the first. Many enterprises owe their origin to his energy and perseverance and he will be missed by all. He was one of the original firm of Stephens & Hawthorn, grocers, of this place and will be greatly missed in the place. He leaves a wife and two children to mourn his loss, and they will look forward to the time when they shall meet him in a land where there shall be no more parting. The funeral services were conducted at this residence under the auspices of the Odd Fellows and United Workmen orders, and was well attended. The sympathy of the entire community are extended to the relatives in this hour of their trial.

The following are the resolutions of the Nevada Lodge of Odd Fellows at their meeting this week:

WHEREAS, In view of the loss we have sustained by the decease of our associate and brother, David L. Stephens, and of the still heavier loss sustained by those who were nearest and dearest to him: and

WHEREAS, It is but just that we express our recognition of his merits and virtues, therefore be it

Resolved. That it is but a just tribute to the memory of the departed to say, that in regretting his removal from our midst we mourn for one who was, in every way, worthy of our respect and regard.

Resolved. That we sincerely condole the family of the deceased on the dispensation with which it has pleased Divine Providence to afflict them.

Resolved. That these our heartfelt testimonials of sympathy and sorrow be forwarded to the widow of our deceased brother, and that the same be spread upon the minutes of this Lodge by the Secretary and published in the Nevada papers.

At a regular meeting of Nevada Lodge, No. 115, A. O. U. W., the following resolutions were adopted:

WHEREAS, The Hand of Death has been laid upon our brother David Lytle Stephens,

Resolved, That we, the members of Nevada Lodge, No. 115, Ancient Order of United Workmen, tender our heartfelt sympathy to his sorrowing family.

Resolved, That in his death we have lost a worthy member of our Society; one who was more than ordinarially endeared to us on account of his frank, genial nature, his sturdy integrity, his independence of mind and his unassuming and virtuous manner of life.

Resolved, That we drape our Lodge room in mourning, and that a member of our Order be appointed to prepare, and deliver in open Lodge, an address upon the life and character of our dead brother.

Resolved, That the Nevada papers be requested to print these resolutions, and that copy be presented to the widow of our deceased brother.
