From Story County Watchman April 9, 1880
Mr. K. K. Hove and I. Ingerbritson have each lost a child by some kind of disease that is quite quick in its effects. The physicians in attendance are not agreed, some pronouncing it a scarlet fever of a malignant type; others as diphtheria, or as the two combined. In the cases above, the length of time of sickness was about 24 hours.
The physicians in attendance we believe have decided that is is contagious under favorable circumstances, and all should be careful that the instructions be carried out. In some instances cautionary measures have been taken, and we think the disease is already checked. The disease has been quite fatal in the northern part of this county and the lower part of Hardin and Hamilton. Let all disinfectants freely. Copperas is one of the best and it is cheap.
Last evening another of the children of Mr. Hove died with the same disease, and another is still ailing.
