THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, November 18, 2010.

Vivian Elvira Stalheim was born to Valborg and Elick Elverson on Sept. 14, 1918, in Dell Rapids, S.D. Vivian passed on to join her husband, Ole, with the Lord Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at Stevens Funeral Home, 607 28th St., in Ames. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, in Garretson Cemetery in Garretson, S.D.

Following graduation from Dell Rapids High School, Vivian completed a teacher’s certificate at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1940. She then taught elementary education in Aberdeen until marrying Ole in 1942. They moved to Hurley, S.D., where they started their family and Ole began his veterinary practice. Moving to Vermillion, S.D., in 1944, she earned a bachelor’s degree in English at the University of South Dakota. She was active in university and church women’s associations and, being an excellent musician, taught her family and friends the piano, and sang with many church choirs.

The Stalheim family moved to Ames in 1964, where she earned a master’s degree in English at Iowa State University in 1964. She taught in the Ames schools and for the community colleges in Boone and Marshalltown. She followed this with overseas teaching in the Sudan, China and Turkey. She capped her career teaching English at Szombetaly University, Hungary, as a volunteer for the Peace Corps in 1994.

She is survived by one daughter, Julie Ann, of Mankato, Minn.; three sons, Alan, of Carpenteria, Calif., David, of Denver, Colo., and Jon, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
