John K. Peterson, III, 88, of Nevada, Iowa, died Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Story County Senior Care in Nevada. Iowa.

John was born November 11, 1921, in Nevada, Iowa, the son of John Knutson and Helen (Drybread) Peterson. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1941. He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Ballantyne in 1947. Mary Jane preceded John in death in 1997. John had been a mechanic at Coover Chevrolet and Massey Ferguson in Nevada. He enjoyed fishing and model cars and trains.

John is survived by two sons: John K. Peterson, IV, of Nevada, Iowa, Michael (Arlyss) Peterson of Nevada, Iowa; a daughter: Bonnie (Mark) Olson of Elgin, Illinois; 9 grandchildren: Jennifer Olson (Ben DuBois), Andrea (Claudio) Encina, Monica (Terry) Peterson-Monk, John K. Peterson V, Eric Peterson, Anna Madison (Matt Hewett), Sarah (David) Hanlon, Jayna Peterson (Wade Grauerholz), Jake Peterson (Uyen Nguyen); 5 great-grandchildren; and a brother: William (Kay) Peterson of Mesa, Arizona.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son: William Paul Peterson in 2002; and a sister: Lydia Ann McLaughlin.

A Graveside Service will be held Monday, October 25, 2010 at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery with Pastor Dennis Reynolds officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa Hospice, 2 West Main Street, Marshalltown, Iowa 50158.

The Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory in Nevada, Iowa handled arrangements.
