Esther Lund, 88, of Story City, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell. Memorials may be given to Bethany Life Communities and Alzheimer’s Research.

Esther and her family are being cared for by Becker Funeral and Cremation Service of Jewell.

Esther Evangeline Oppedal was born Oct. 2, 1922, in Stanhope to Torkel and Johanna (Anderson) Oppedal. She graduated from Norwegian American Hospital School of Nursing in May 1944. She served in the U. S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II. On Dec. 13, 1947, she married Arthur Lund at the Little Brown Church of Nashua. They farmed near Jewell. She worked as a registered nurse until joining the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames for 28 years. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Story City and the American Legion Post in Story City. She moved to Story City in 1979 and has been a resident of Bethany Manor since 2008.

She is survived by a son, Mark (Sherry) Lund, of Jewell; two granddaughters, Katie Lund, of Story City, and Jamie (Brian) Fischer, of Cedar Rapids, one daughter-in-law, Anne Lund, of West Des Moines; one sister, Inez Duft, two brothers, Willard (Janet) and Stanley (Barbara) Oppedal, all of Ames; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur, in 1977; an infant son, John, in 1953; a son, Luke, in 2005; and six brothers, Alfred, Leonard, Jean, Leo, Gaylord and Delmar.
