COUNTY PIONEER CALLED BY DEATH

JOHN McCARTNEY HAS BEEN RESIDENT OF COLO FOR OVER 63 YEARS

Colo, Sept. 11- In the death of John McCartney who ded at his home here on Sunday this community loses a man who lived probably the longest of any man in the eastern part of the county, he having made his home here for over 63 years.
He was a native of New York state, where he was born July 6, 1835 and at the time of his death had reached the age of 83 years, 2 months and 2 days.
When he was about five years of age he came west with his parents and they located first in Illinois. There he grew to young manhood and when about 20 years of age came to Story county and located in the vicinity of Colo, which had been his home continually since then. There he had lived during the founding and development of the place and he was one of the best known and highly respected citizens of the neighborhood.
Mr. McCartney was married to Miss Naomi Ross March 17, 1861. She proceded him to the spirit world by about four years. To them were born eight children, five of whom are living. They are Mrs. Alice Jones, Colo; William, of Boone; George, of Rockford; Laura McCartney of Colo; Mrs. Maude Carpenter, of Colo.
Mr. McCartney became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church shen still a young man and remained faithful to the church of his choice and helf firmly to the faith of the gospel of the Son of God. The deceased had been in failing health for a number of months, and at time passed through intense suffering. He said to his pastor upon different occation that his trust was in the Lord, and when it was God's will to call him hence, he was ready and willing to do so.
He leaves to mourn his departure two sons, three daughters, twenty-three grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and host of old acquaintances and friends.
Those present at the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. William McCartney and sons, of Boone; Theodore Richardson, of Newburg; Mr. and Mrs. William Hefly of Cambridge; Mr. and Mrs. John Seliers of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. John Jones, of Marshalltown; Mrs. Norah Phillips of Newburg.
