THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, September 28, 2010.

Denis Lou Schaefer, 73, of Ames, passed away Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at Israel Family Hospice House. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with family present from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Adams Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in the Garden Room at Reiman Gardens, with Ed Ruppert officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Denis was born Aug. 14, 1937, in Buffalo Center, to Louis and Tillie (Steinberg) Schaefer. He graduated from Simpson College with a B.A. in business administration. He went on to obtain a master’s degree in social work from the University of Iowa. Denis was employed by Lutheran Social Services and spent the majority of his career as the director of Beloit in Ames.

He married Sue Ann Mason June 10, 1962, in Pleasantville.

Denis enjoyed the outdoors and the beauty of nature. Gardening, fishing and family were all very dear to him.

He is survived by his wife, Sue, of Ames; two children, David (Laura) Schaefer, of Spencer, and Emily Schaefer, of Wahpeton; two grandchildren, Tyler and Tanner; and several nieces and nephews and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Jane Madson and Kay Ihns; and brother, Max.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Israel Family Hospice House.

Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
