NEVADA PIONEER DIED YESTERDAY

James McLaughlin Sr. Called By Death After Extended Illness

James McLaughlin, one of the pioneers of this city, died at his home in the second ward at four o'clock Tuesday morning and the funeral will probably be held from St. Patrick's church Friday morning. Mr. McLaughlin had been ill for the past 8 months and his death was not unexpected.

He had been a resident at Nevada since 1875 and was well known in the city. He was native of Florence, N.Y. where he was born May 24, 1834 making him over 84 years of age.

Born in New York of Irish parentage, Mr. McLaughlin grew in manhood there and was married to Miss Mary Dooley in 1871 and three years later came west and settled in Wisconsin where he made whis home until 1875 when he came to Iowa and located in Nevada which has been his home since. For a number of years he worked for the C. & N. W. Ry. company saved his money, bought land and of later years has lived from the fruits of his toil.

There are seven children left to mourn the death of the parents, the wife and mother having passed away twenty years ago in August. Upon the death of the wife Mr. McLaughlin was left with a large family of young children upon his hands but he cared for them and reared them to manhood and womanhood and all of them respected in the various communities in which they are located. They are well showing the training of the parents. Mr. McLaughlin was a man of excellent character and was highly respected in the community.

The children are Michael, the eldest, now a resident of Nevada and a councilman from the second ward; John E. a farmer of near Armour, S. D.; James a farmer of near Rockwell, up in Cerro Gordo county; Edward who is now located at Ducane, Idaho; Lewis who is now at home but has lately been a Ogden, Utah, where he has been a school principal for a number of years; Miss Catherine who taught school for a number of years in the county but of late has been taking care of the home [and looking after the wants of the] father; Frank who is now in the United States army and is stationed at Fort Worth, Texas and the youngest Philip who is local agent for the American Express company.

The children and other members of the family will receive the most profound sympathy in their hours of sadness.
