Mary McNally, 97, passed away Friday, July 30, 2010, at Northcrest in Ames. Memorial services and a celebration of her life and accomplishments will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at First United Methodist Church in Ames. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at Adams Funeral Home. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.
Mary was born April 15, 1913, in Grinnell, to Christie L. and Ida McNally. She attended Grinnell High School, received a B.A. from Grinnell College and a master’s degree from Iowa State University. During her professional career she worked at Ames High School as an English teacher, led the English Department and was a guidance counselor. During her career at Ames High School she received many awards for teaching excellence.
She married Richard E. Paulson on Nov. 24, 1984, in Fox Point, Wis. As many in Ames are aware, Ms. McNally had a unique passion for the education, achievement and success of her students. Within and beyond her family, she was affectionately and respectfully known as “Auntie Mary,” an irreplaceable mentor and companion, always distinguished by her love, enthusiasm, dignity, wisdom and respect for others. Mary’s interests included, reading and literature, music, theater, the outdoors and travel.
Mary is survived by several nieces and nephews, Christie and Mary McCann, of Mequon, Wis., John and Mimi McNally, of Shawnee Mission, Kan., Mike and Mariella McNally, of Stone Mountain, Ga., Paul and Valerie McNally, of Iowa City, William and Karen McNally, of Grinnell, Mary Pat (McNally) and George Miller, of Cedar Rapids, Miriam (McNally) and Roger Rusley, of Lakewood, Colo., Mary C. (McNally) and Thomas Sharp, of Savannah, Ga., and Ann (McNally-predeceased) and Paul Labieniec, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and many great-nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard; her parents; brothers, James and Edward McNally; and a sister, Helen Butler.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made, in her name, to the “Ames Education Fund” or the Ames Public Library Foundation.
