Lewis Ham, 79, Resident Here 50 Years, Dies

A resident of Ames and vicinity for about 50 years, Lewis Allison Ham, 79, died at 5 a. m., Tuesday at his home at 517 East Lincoln way. He had been ill with cancer for the past year and a half and had been bedfast for the past two weeks.

Ham was born in Chickasaw, Wis., Dec. 12, 1856. When about 20 years old he went to Nebraska, lived there about 10 years and then moved to Ames. He married Sarah Reynolds of Kelley in 1893.

With Herbert Nowling and Charles Gamble, Ham opened the first independent oil station in Ames in 1920, and Ham operated this station on East Lincoln way for a number of years.

Surviving him are his wife and six children, Floyd of Ames, Harry of Whitefish, Mont., Cecil of Adel, Mrs. Floyd C. Nash of Los Angeles, Mrs. J. W. Mannsechreck of Ames and Mrs. L. J. Eppert of Ames; also two brothers, Riley of Charles City and David of Long Beach, Cal., and three sisters, Mrs. Emil Skortman of Ames, Mrs. H . Cattell of Long Beach and Mrs. Ed Giddings of San Diego, Cal.

Private funeral services will be held at 2 p. m., Friday from the Adams chapel, with the Rev. J. Harold Gamble of the Baptist church in charge. Burial will be in the Ames cemetery. The body will lie in state from Wednesday morning until time for the services.
