THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, August 3, 2010.
Edward Leo Berger, 81, of Ames, died at his home Saturday, July 31, 2010, after a two year illness. His wife, Iona, and family were beside him as he left for his place in heaven. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Ed was born April 1, 1929, at his family home in Iowa Falls, to Henry and Florence (Hofmann) Berger. He graduated from Iowa Falls High School, Ellsworth Junior College of Iowa Falls and the University of Iowa.
Ed married Iona Ann Bullis in Iowa Falls on Sept. 9, 1950. During the Korean War, he was stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C., while he served in the U.S. Army for two years. He and Iona enjoyed living in the South during this time.
He worked as a statistician at the Iowa Department of Transportation for 30 years, retiring in 1991.
He enjoyed vacationing in Branson, Mo., for 25 years and watching sports on TV, especially basketball and football. Most of all, he enjoyed being with his family and loved to bake and cook for them and his friends. He was a very special husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed by them as well as his friends and relatives.
Edward is survived by his wife of 59 years, Iona; one son, Bill, and his wife, Shelly, of Jefferson; and one daughter, Lisa, and her husband, David Amdahl, of Ames. He is also survived by four beautiful granddaughters, Valerie Greiner and her husband, Kent, Krystal Berger, Katie Amdahl and Kristin Amdahl; a delightful great-grandson, Logan Michael Greiner; an older brother, Harold and his wife, Margaret, of Pasadena, Calif.; three nieces; and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lloyd.
