THE NEVADA JOURNAL, Nevada, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, July 15, 2010.

Hannah Kellogg Dowell, a former Nevada resident, recently of Washington, D.C., passed away peacefully, May 18, 2010, at age 92. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and raised in Crookston and St. Paul, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Austin Allyn Dowell, a professor of agricultural economics, and Isabel Dyer Dowell, for whom Nevada’s Dyer-Dowell Victorian house is named.

Hannah K. Dowell received her B.A. in English in 1940 and went on to earn an M.A. degree in public administration in 1944 from the University of Minnesota. She then commenced a long and successful career in personnel management with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Hannah Dowell was noted as a pioneering woman administrator surrounded by a staff of men. She later said one of her greatest satisfactions was in mentoring other women who soon followed.

Hannah was a longtime supporter and volunteer at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. as well as a member of PEO, the Women’s National Democratic Club and the DAR. A generous philanthropist and committed supporter of higher education, Hannah established several scholarship funds, as well as an endowed professorship at the University of Minnesota in the name of her father. She also was a supporter of many Nevada institutions, including the library and SCORE facilities. Along with her sisters, she helped establish the Dyer-Dowell family home as an historical museum.

Hannah is survived by her sister Margaret Dowell Gravatt, MD, of Portland, Oregon, and by her nephew Dowell Myers (Susan) of Pasadena, California, niece Hannah Kellogg Myers (Arthur) of Irving, Texas, and niece Austin Myers of Los Angeles. Aunt Hannah will be laid to rest in the Dowell family plot on the hill in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 17, at 10:30 am, at the Dyer- Dowell House, 922 Fifth Street, Nevada, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established to benefit the Dyer-Dowell House in the name of Hannah K. Dowell.
