George Biensen, Jr, 92, of State Center, died of natural causes Tuesday, June 29th 2010. He was born in rural State Center June 3, 1918 to George Biensen Sr. and Harriet Riemenschneider Biensen. He was a letter winner in football at State Center High School, graduating in 1935.
He took winter Farm Operations classes at Iowa State College. George met Barbara Ann Ryan at a dance in the Memorial Union on a Friday afternoon. They were married Aug. 10, 1941 and had 4 children: Mike (Elma) Grand Prairie TX; Barbara Jo Rothfuss (David) Columbia SC; Rodney (Tricia) Nevada IA; and Kelly (Nina) State Center IA. He always made it a special point to attend any and all of his children’s activities.
George was an 80-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of State Center. He served as an Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher and sang occasionally in the church choir. He and Barbara were members of the Presbyteers, a married couples group within the church. They were also charter members of the Lincoln Valley Golf Course, State Center. George was a lifetime member of the Masons and served as Master of the Lodge for the State Center chapter.
He was a proud 4-H leader for more than 25-years of the Central Iowa Champs, a boys and girls livestock club. Two of his club members achieved state office with 4-H. As a third generation farmer, George started farming all the crop ground with horses. He sold PAG seed corn, raised and sold certified oats and worked for the Marshall County ASCS office in the field. George served more than 20-years on the state-wide Health Insurance Association board, a committee of Blue Cross Blue Shield Health Insurance Company.
George spent his lifetime raising purebred Berkshire hogs with his son Kelly. They raised top testing Berkshire boars and top placing breeding stock at national hog shows. George was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Berkshire Association.
George was a lifelong supporter of the Iowa State Cyclones. He enjoyed watching both ISU football and wrestling and was a member of the Cyclone Wrestling Club and a donor to Cyclone stadium. At the age of 72, George participated in the Iowa Senior Games, winning 5 medals competing with pliers in his “farmer pants”.
George is survived by his wife of 69 years, Barbara Ann, his four children and their spouses; grandchildren Brandon Biensen, Rhodes Ia; Ryan Biensen, Ft. Madison Ia; Meredith Bilbro (Brian), Atlanta Ga; Leah, Caleb and Luke Biensen, Nevada Ia;
Alison Ruddle, Columbia SC; Paige Bryars (Dan), Marietta Ga; Candace Wagner (Sean), Hollywood Fl; great grandchildren Jesse Biensen, State Center Ia; Esabella Bilbro, Atlanta Ga; and Mary Alice Bryars, Marietta Ga. And step grandchildren Johnny Gomez (Norma) of Alice TX. Children: Leslie, Melissa, Samantha, Ashley and Michael grandchildren: Levi, Roman, Louie, Ryan, Miranda, Fabian, Sierra, M.J., Annadale, Eliana and ,E.J, Rene Gomez of Alice TX . Children: Josh, and Ashton Val Flores (Maria) of Paso Robles CA. Children: Gabriel, Sonia and Danny.
Visitation was held at the Bacon Funeral Home, Nevada Ia on Monday, July 5th. Funeral service was held Tuesday July 6th, at the First Presbyterian Church, in State Center, with burial following at Hillside Cemetery. A memorial gathering was held at Lincoln Valley Golf Club, State Center, Tuesday July 6th.
