Steve Lutz, 60, of Wolcottville, Ind., formerly of Ames, died Wednesday, June 15, 2010. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 18, at Adams Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ames, with visitation two hours prior to the service.

Missionary Stephen A. Lutz, M.D., was called to his eternal home Tuesday, June 15, 2010, after a long illness. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 18, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames, and also from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at St Paul Lutheran Church in Ames. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Todd Jenks.

Stephen A. Lutz was the son of missionary Rev. Arnold J. and Juanita A. (Becker) Lutz and born in Nagercoil, South India, on Nov. 5, 1949. He attended school at Kodikanal, South India, through high school, received his B.S. Ed. from Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Neb., and his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo. Following residency, he practiced surgery in Muscatine for three years before accepting a call to serve with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in the medical mission work in Papua, New Guinea, beginning in 1986 until the present.

He married Julia D. Behrens March 27, 1978; she survives, along with their children, Anton, of Papua, New Guinea, Paul (and Rebecca and four grandchildren), of Newport News, Va., Laura (and Nathan) Hall, of Minneapolis, and David, of Valparaiso, Ind. He also is survived by his mother, of Ames; six brothers, John (and Christi), of Adams Lake, Ind., David (and Nancy), of Danbury, Conn., Timothy (and Danh), of Ames, Philip (and TaiLing), of Rancho Cordova, Calif., Charles (and Suzanne), of Annapolis, Md., and Thomas, of Wasilla, Alaska; and one sister, Alice (and Gary) Paul, of St. Louis, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorials may be given to the Papua New Guinea Mission Society (P.O. Box 28356 Oakdale, MN 55128) and LCMS World Mission (1333 S. Kirkwood Road, St. Louis, MO 63122).
