Chester L. "Toppy" Lillard, 80, of Collins, died Wednesday, April 13, at Israel Family Hospice House of ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Collins United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Larry LaVelle officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Collins.
Chester was born July 22, 1924, in Ames, the son of W.H. and Mabel (Torry) Lillard. He was a lifelong resident of Collins and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked as an elevator manager at the Co-Op Elevator in Collins for 35 years, retiring in 1990.
He was a lifetime member of the Freland-Carver American Legion Post 81 and a 52-year member of Voyageur Militaire 40-8 of Story County. He also served on the Collins School Board and was a member of Collins United Methodist Church, where he served on the church board. His hobbies included camping with his family, working at K-mart in Ames, feeding the birds and squirrels, and playing pool, cribbage and poker.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille D. Lillard of Collins; two sons, Steven (Karen) Lillard of Panama City, Panama, and Dennis (Lisa) Lillard of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Jesse, Stefanee, Jordan, Kyle, Ryan and Austin; two sisters, Colleen Larson and Norma (Merle) Eggers, both of Ames; as well as many dear nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Wilma and LaWanda.
Visitation with the family present will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the church. Memorials may be made to Collins United Methodist Church, Collins American Legion or Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
Fredregill Funeral Home in Collins is in charge of arrangements.
