Veda Delores Heers, 89, of Bethany Manor in Story City, went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on April 28, 2010. Funeral services were held Monday, May 3 at 10:30 a.m, at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial will follow in the Story City Municipal Cemetery. There was a visitation of family and friends on Sunday, May 2 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.

Veda was born April 24, 1921 to Daniel and Mary (Anfinson) Buckels in Ellsworth, Iowa. Veda was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth, Iowa. She graduated from Ellsworth High School and loved playing basketball, even winning some trophies for her effort.

She married Albert Heers on Feb. 14, 1942 in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he was stationed in the United States Army. After the service they moved to Ellsworth where they farmed and Veda worked at the Story City Hospital. She was a nurse's aide there for over 30 years.
Veda and Al built a home in Story City while still continuing to farm. She was a member of St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City, loved playing golf and tending to her garden. She also enjoyed cooking and baking.

Veda is survived by her husband of 68 years, Albert Heers, of Story City; her son, Jon Heers of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; her daughter, Jan Porter of Tampa, Florida; three granddaughters, Marissa Heers of Des Moines, Jasmine Porter and Najja Porter of Tampa, Florida; and her great-granddaughter Ava Heers of Des Moines, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother; and her sister Myrtle Eide.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be designated to Bethany Manor in Story City.
