FATAL INJURY AT CANNING FACTORY

O. P. TIEG DIED YESTERDAY FOLLOWING ACCIDENT WHILE AT WORK

O. P. Tieg, an employee of the Marshall Canning Company, was fatally injured yesterday when he was caught in the corn conveyer and severely mangled and crushed.

The accident happened about 9:30 in the forenoon and Dr. J. A. Snyder, who was called, rushed him immediately to the hospital in Story City in an effort to save his life, but his injuries were too severe and he died at 11:45. His head was not injured and he retained consciousness during the two hours he lived after the accident.

Death was caused by shock and a pressure on the heart from the broken ribs. The lef side of his chest was caved in and both legs were broken, one between the knee and hip and in the other the bones were crushed both above and below the knee. The entire left side of his body was considerably bruised and mangled.

It is not known definitley just how he was caught in the machinery. He was foreman in charge of operation in the husking shed and, with his helpers, Chris Egeland and Leslie Wierson, was working around in the shed before the factory started on the day's pack of sweet corn. He had evidently stepped into the pit in the east end of the large conveyor that carries corn to the huskers, to fix something and when Mr. Egeland started the machinery, was caught by the cross pieces and carried several feet to the east end, over the shaft and up to the second floor before it was stopped. Part of the framework of the conveyor trough had to be sawed off before he could be removed. Mr. Wierson was close by when he saw Mr. Teig being carried away by the conveyor and grabbed him in attempt to stop him from being carried along, but was unable to do anything to help.

No blame can be placed upon anyone connected with the accident. Mr. Teig had previously told Mr. Egeland that whenever he was ready to start operation, he should put on the switch and start the machinery. When a load of corn came yesterday forenoon, Mr. Egeland proceeded to do as he was told, not knowing that Teig was in a dangerous position.

The is the first major accident that has happened at this factory during the 15 years it has been operated. From 100 to 200 people are employed during the canning season each year and minor mishaps occur occasionally, but this is the first severe injury to any employee. Mr. Teig was first employed by the company in 1923 and had worked at the factory each season since that time with the exception of two years. He was some over 61 years of age.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Peter P. Teig home and at 2:00 o'clock in the Bergen church.
