THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Sunday, May 1, 2010.

Alice Eugenia Warner, 85, of Fort Collins, Colo., passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010. In her final weeks, Alice and her family were comforted by the skilled staff at both Pathways Hospice and Columbine Care Center West. Cremation has been completed. A private family memorial will be held.

Alice was born Oct. 5, 1924, in Harbor Springs, Mich., to Arthur and Ethel Carpenter. She graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1943 and Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo in 1947. Alice also attended the University of Michigan and received a teaching certificate from Wayne State University in Detroit.

On Sept. 6, 1947, Alice married James L. Warner in Ann Arbor, Mich. They lived briefly in Kalamazoo, Mich., before moving to Detroit in 1949. From 1961 to 1986, they lived in Ames, where for many years she was employed in varied capacities by the Ames Community School District. Alice and James came to Fort Collins in 1986 when they both retired from their careers.

Alice was an avid gardener, took an active part in party politics, and performed a variety of voluntary services for community organizations. Her favorite activity was working with Head Start children. For several years, she competed in the Rocky Mountain Senior Games.

Alice is survived by her husband of 62 years, James; daughter, Carol, of Denver, Colo.; and son, David and his wife, Cecile, of Boulder, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Arthur; and sister, Margaret Longhurst.
