THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, April 30, 2010.

On Thursday, April 29, 2010, our loving and caring mother, grandmother and friend passed away at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 3, at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City. Burial will be in Story City Municipal Cemetery.

Gladys Marie (Peterson) Clayberg was born May 16, 1917, in rural Story County, to Pete A. and Margaret (Williamson) Peterson. On Jan. 4, 1936, she married Lowell Clayberg, and to this union seven children were born. She was a lifelong resident of Story City and a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

While raising her family, she worked many jobs. During World War II, she worked at the Ordnance Plant in Ankeny, making ammunition. At the age of 43, she began working in the print room at Bourns in Ames, and worked there until the age of 73, when the plant was closed.

She was a person with talented hands and an adventurous, determined spirit, which she attributed to being a feisty, full-blooded Norwegian. She enjoyed many hobbies, including music, sewing, crocheting, painting and traveling. She was a wonderful baker and was affectionately named “Grandma Apple” by her great-grandson, a name she was proud of. She was a person with a great sense of humor, who loved to laugh and have fun.

She had a great love for her friends and for all animals, but her family was always her No. 1 priority. She loved her large family and enjoyed spending time with them. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed by many.

She is survived by six of her children, Darlene (Max) Loder, of Tucson, Ariz., Ronald (Carol) Clayberg, of Ames, Terry (Joan) Clayberg, of Tucson, Ariz., Pamela Hobbs (Edd Clem), of Ames, Randy Clayberg, of Story City, and Colleen Clayberg, of Glendale, Ariz.; one daughter-in-law, Betty (Gerald) Clayberg, of Everett, Wash.; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sister-in-law and dear friend, Ruth Clayberg, of Story City; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Gerald; her parents; four brothers; and two sisters.
