THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, April 29, 2010.

Douglas Allen Bryner, 59, died recently at his home in Ames. His funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ames, 1015 N. Hyland Ave.

Doug was born Feb. 20, 1951, in College Park, Md., to John and Inez Bryner. Although he spent some of his youth on the East Coast, Ames was his home. Doug graduated from Ames High School in 1969 and from Iowa State University in 1976. He was a giving individual and served the Ames community working tirelessly with the mentally disabled.

He enjoyed the outdoors and took many vacations in Canada fishing, camping and canoeing with his sons. His two great passions were running and bicycling, participating in many bicycle tours and running events throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He organized the TIMTAM ultra-marathon in Ames every spring and participated in RAGBRAI nearly every year for the past 20 years. He loved running with and spending time with all of his friends from the Ames Area Running Club.

He was a deeply spiritual person who was continually searching for a better life for himself and others. His love and appreciation of history was a lifelong avocation.

He is survived by his father; his mother; two brothers, Darrell and Steve; half-sister, Rebekah; two sons, Matt and Josh; and two grandchildren, Hannah and Henry.

Adams Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting with arrangements.
