Ole S. Haaland, Well Known Retired Farmer of This Place, Died Last Saturday Morning at Hospital at Heron Lake, Minn., After Operation for Hernia, Death Came as Shock to Relatives Here
The people of this community were shocked last Saturday afternoon, when a telephone message from Heron Lake, Minn., announced that Ole S. Haaland, of this place had passed away at the Heron Lake Hospital that morning. Very few knew of his being at the hospital and those who knew of his being there had heard only favorable reports, so they were unprepared for the shock when news of his death reached them. He had gone to Heron Lake three weeks before to have an operation for hernia performed and this was successful in every way and he was making good progress towards recovery as far as anyone could tell, until last Friday morning when he appeared to be weak, and all day long he gradually sank lower until the end came at five o'clock Saturday morning. Mrs. Mary Ersland, a sister-in-law, was called from Slayton the evening before his death and she was with him to the end. He seemed to suffer no pain and his passing away was as peaceful as if he went to sleep. Mrs. Ersland accompanied the remains to Roland, arriving here Saturday night.
Ole S. Haaland was born on the Haaland farm which he now owned just at the edge of town, on September 1, 1863 and was 47 years, 3 months and 9 days old when death claimed him. On February 27, 18[xx] (unreadable) he was married to Betsy Ersland, who now mourns the loss of a kind husband, with her children Annie, Agnes and Sammy, who have lost a kind and loving father. He always lived on the farm, buying it after his father's death, and still owns it, but about seven years ago they built a pretty residence in the east part of town and moved there, this still being their home. Besides his wife and children he leaves an aged mother, Mrs. Anna Haaland, a brother C. S. Haaland and a sister, Mrs. Malinda Nerem, Langford, S. D., besides numerous other relatives and friends. The funeral was held from Bergen church on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. G. Smedal conducting the services. The church was filled with friends and relatives, who wished to pay their last respect to a friend. Interment took place in the Roland cemetery.
Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ove Hovland, Mrs. Henry Pederson and Mr. M. O. Johnson all of near Randall, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Holm, Mesdames Tom Ersland, P. O. Frette, Margrethe Boyd, Messrs Samual Olson, Ole Thorsbakken, Lars Boyd, of Story City, Mrs. O. O. Nereim, of Langford, S. D., and Mrs. Mary Ersland of Slayton, Minn.
The deceased was one of the community who attended to his own affairs, was respected by all who knew him, was industrious, and what work he did, he did well. He was a member of Bergen church and had always been from his childhood. His untimely death brings sorrow to numerous friends in this community. The Record extends to the sorrowing ones, its sincere sympathy during the hour of their bereavement.
