Grandma Jacobson Passes Away

After Having Been Confined to Her Bed for Five Months, Grandma Dorthe Jacobson Passed Away On Tuesday Morning, Funeral Will be Held on Friday

Mrs. Dorthe Jacobson passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ole J. Jacobson on Tuesday morning, after having been sick for five months. Her death had been expected almost hourly for several days, and for the last couple days she sank into unconsciousness, and died in peace and without suffering. The immediate cause of her death was a tumor of the stomach, which together with her advanced years made her death only a matter of time.

Dorthe Thompson was born in Selvig, Naerstrand, Stavangers Amt, Norway, on April 14, 1825, where she grew to womanhood. In company with her future husband and others, she came to this country in the summer of 1854, settling at Lisbon, Kendall County, Ill., where she was married to Claus Jacobson shortly after their arrival from Norway. Here they settled on a farm and lived there until the spring of 1865, when a large number of families from that section of Illinois sought new homes on the fertile prairies of Iowa, arriving at their destination, which was Roland, in June. After a few weeks, they had their hut erected on a farm that they purchased about two miles southwest of town and lived there until 19 years ago, when they built a home in Roland and moved there. On March 27, 1898, her husband died, since which time she made her home with her son, J. C. Jacobson and daughter, Mrs. O. J. Jacobson, being at the latter’s home when she passed away. At her death she was 86 years and 11 days old.

She leaves to mourn her death two sons and three daughters, they being J. C. Jacobson, Mrs. Anna J. Jacobson, and Mrs. Julia C. Rod, all of this place, Mrs. Secilia Teig, of Lakefield, Minn., and T. C. Jacobson, of Forest City. She leaves also 25 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and an aged brother, Paul Thompson, and numerous other relatives and friends to mourn her death. Two children died in their infancy.

Grandma Jacobson was one of the quiet and unassuming Christian women, who always won the love and respect of all with whom she came in contact, and she was always ready to render any help possible to any one in need. With her husband she was one of the first to help organize the Norwegian Lutheran church at Story City, which parish was later divided, and they joined with the local parish organizing the church still known as Bergen congregation. At all times, she took active interest in the auxiliary work of the congregation, such as the aid society and was always willing to do her share toward the extension of God’s kingdom here on earth. She died, as she had lived a true Christian woman. The writer is a grandson, and when we wrote the above, we did so because of our intimate knowledge of her life, and to us, it will be a loss long to be remembered. The funeral will be held from Bergen church on Friday afternoon at two o’clock after which interment will take place in the Roland cemetery.
