Elderly Farmer, Living East of Town, Who Died Suddenly Last Thursday Morning, Was Laid to Rest Last Saturday
Peter S. Kaltwedt, whose sudden demise was chronicled in last week's issue of the Record, was born in Aardal, Norway, April 10, 1836, and died at his home east of town on Thursday, September 30, 1909, being 73 years, 5 months and 20 days old, when he was suddenly taken across the Jordan. Of late he has been feeling poorly, but came to town on Wednesday and consulted Dr. Rice, after which he attended the Kredsmode at Bergen church. He went to bed as usual that evening, but at 1 o'clock his wife was awakened by his troubled breathing, and before she could call the others in the family he had passed away.
Mr. and Mrs. Kaltwedt were married in Norway in 1863, to which union three children were born, two of them dying when young, the other, Mrs. Malinda Larson, living with them. Besides his wife and daughter, he leaves numerous friends and relatives to mourn his sudden death. In 1883 they came to Illinois, where they resided for three years, after which they came to Roland and settled on a farm six miles south of town. Twelve years ago they sold their farm and moved to a farm west of town, which they sold last fall, and bought a farm three miles east of town, and which was now their home. He was a quiet, unassuming man, respected by all who knew him, and he lived as he died, a devout and earnest Christian.
The funeral was held Saturday afternoon from Bergen church, Rev. G. Smedal officiating, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Roland cemetery. A very large number of people were present at the funeral to pay their respects to the dead. Those from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Edwinson, of Christo, Ill., and Mr. and Mrs. Ole Highland, of Radcliffe. The family has the sincere sympathy of numerous friends at the hour of the sorrow.
