B. Fagerland Killed By Train

Former Roland Man Found Dead Beside Northwestern Tracks at Marshalltown Last Tuesday Morning By Engineer

A most shocking report was heard on our streets last Tuesday morning when it was told that Bartolis Fagerland, of McCallsburg, had been killed by a train or had been murdered for his money at Marshalltown during the night. No particulars could be had concerning the tragedy until the Times-Republican reached here on the evening train. The story as printed in the T-R is substantially correct as far as can be learned.

As near as can be learned, Mr. Fagerland had come to Marshalltown on the afternoon train and was then loaded with liquor, as he was addicted to the habit. When he left his home, he had considerable money on his person. He was seen as late as ten o'clock by Oliver Cole, of this place, but nothing more was seen of him until an Iowa Central engineer found his body by the Northwestern tracks about forty feet east of the Third Avenue crossing. From the injuries that he received, it is supposed that he had started to cross the tracks when struck by a passing train. His whole right side was bruised up considerably, but the skin was not broken. His left leg was broken in two places and his right arm broken near the wrist. It is hinted that there may be foul play connected with the awful tragedy, as his purse was found near a restaurant further up the street, but at this writing nothing further has developed.

Mr. Fagerland was formerly a citizen of Roland, but moved to McCallsburg about eight years ago. He leaves a wife and two sons to mourn his death. The funeral will be held at McCallsburg at two o'clock this afternoon, after which interment takes place in the Roland cemetery, where friends will have an opportunity to view the corpse.
