Pioneer Settler of Howard Township is No More
John Christian was born in Skaanevig, Norway, Europe, July 13, 1834, and died at his home northwest of town on Tuesday, February 25, 1908, at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 12 days. The cause of his death was heart trouble.
He came to this country in 1847 settling in Illinois, but in 1857 he came to Iowa, moving to the farm, which was still his home when he died.
On November 8, 1862, he was married to Miss Cecelia Pearson to which union nine children were born. Four of these died in their infancy, while Mrs. Michael Michaelson died June 25, 1899 and Mrs. S. H. Twedt died March 26, 1901. The three living are Jonas, who lives five miles northwest of here, Otis and Eddie, who are living at the parental home. Besides his three sons, he leaves his wife, his two brothers, Ole and Charles Christian, besides numerous other relatives to mourn his death.
The funeral was held from Salem church last Friday, Rev. J. N. Sandven officiating. The pall bearers were his neighbors, C. Logan, John Ritland, John K. Johnson, J. H. Twedt, O. J. Olson and T. O. Savim. The church was filled with loving friends, who wished to pay their last tribute to the dead. Interment took place in the Roland cemetery.
Those from a distance, who attended the funeral are Mr. and Mrs. Martin Christian, of Radcliffe, N. E. Christian, of Scranton and Lewis Christian of Newark, Ill.
