21 November 1907Civil War Veteran Passes Away
On Thursday morning, November 14, 1907, occurred the death of James E. Miller at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Mossman, after a sickness of several years duration.
The deceased was born near Rising Sun, Ind., January 8, 1841, and was married to Miss Sarah A. Kelso in 1862. His wife died several years ago. He was a veteran of the Civil War having served one year under General Sherman and four years in the navy. Since the war he has been engaged as a contractor and builder, until five years ago, when he received an injury from which he never fully recovered.
He is survived by three children, as follows: Mr. Harry Miller and Mrs. Scott Cable, of Bloomington, Ill., and Mrs. E. G. Mossman, of this place and at whose home he has lived for the past three years.
Owing to the fact that the deceased was known to but a few here, no funeral services were held here, but Mr. and Mrs. Mossman accompanied the corpse to Bloomington, Ill., on Friday, where the funeral service was held from the Christian Mission chapel on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. J. H. Gilliland of the 2nd Christian church conducting the services. The chapel was filled with sympathizing friends and neighbors and the floral offerings were beautiful. The pall bearers were all members of the G. A. R. post and the ladies of the G. A. R. conducted the flag drill, leaving a flag on the breast of the departed.
The remains were laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Evergreen City cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Mossman wish to express their thanks to those friends in Roland who helped and sympathized with them in their trouble, and expressed the hope that loving friends would surround their friends during their time of trouble. The bereaved ones have the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends at this place.
