April 25, 1907A Pioneer of Story City, Known to Many of our Readers Has Passed Away
Mrs. O. A. L. Tjernagel passed away quite suddenly at 5:30 Tuesday evening, April 16. She has had severe spells of asthma and bronchitis during the past 20 or 25 years, but the last month or so she began to get considerably worse and had to keep her bed most of the time. Saturday she sat up a large part of the day, but Sunday she had a relapse and it was then realized that death was imminent. She passed away peacefully, like a child going to sleep - a pleasant ending to a quiet life.
Mrs. Tjernagel belonged to that sturdy class of pioneer women who are becoming scarcer from year to year. Her maiden name was Martha Karina Anderson and she was born in Norway July 10, 1845. She came to this country with her parents in 1857 locating near Norway, LaSalle County, Illinois, where she married her husband, June 11, 1861. In the spring of 1864 she and her husband, with one child, moved to Iowa in a lumber wagon. They settled on a 40 acre piece of land, bought before moving out.
She was the mother of 6 boys and 2 girls, one of the latter dying in 1879 at the age of 5 years. The children are all grown up, ranging in age from 22 to 45 years.
She was a quiet, unassuming and hard working woman, strongly attached to her family, the surviving members of which will feel her loss very deeply.
The funeral services will be held from the St. Petri church Monday forenoon at ten o'clock, thence to Mamrelund cemetery - Story City Herald.
