Thomas McIlwain, 59, of Boone, died Monday, March 29, 2010. Services are pending with Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Thomas Patrick McIlwain, 59, of Boone, passed away from complications of cancer Monday, March 29, 2010, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 1, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 2, at Stevens Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Todd Jenks officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Thomas McIlwain was born Aug. 11, 1950, in Ames, to Bazel and Vivian (Coy) McIlwain. He graduated from Ames High School in 1968. He attended Iowa State University and Boone Junior. College. He married Brenda Santi Sept. 23, 1995.

He was employed by Kmart in Ames for a number of years before owning the Boone Laundramat. He recently owned the Furniture Zone in Boone.

He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs. He coached softball for many of his daughter’s teams. He enjoyed the outdoors. He loved his dogs, Jasmine, Charlie, Starr and Duncan.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda McIlwain, of Boone; one daughter, Samantha McIlwain, of Boone; one son, Jeff (Leah) Mitchell, of Seattle, Wash.; one brother, Jack (Ursula) McIlwain, of Boone; one sister, Marguerite (Dennis) Block, of Des Moines; and several other loving family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and one sister, Kathleen McIlwain.
