THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, March 23, 2010.

Wilma Hazel Cox Helland, 94, of Nevada and formerly of Zearing, peacefully passed away Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Story County Medical Center. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 26, at Nevada Christian Church, 250 W. E Ave., in Nevada, with visitation from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Wilma was born in 1915, on her father’s farm in Hardin County. She graduated from Zearing High School as valedictorian of her class and later married her high school sweetheart, Kermit L. Helland, of McCallsburg. She enjoyed 65 years of marriage and more than 60 years of devoted motherhood.

Wilma was a 71-year member of the Zearing Unit 116 of the American Legion Auxiliary. She held offices locally, county and district plus a state appointment. She was employed over the years in the Story County Auditor’s Office, Treasurer’s Office, and Veteran’s Administration office and served many years as deputy county recorder. Other positions included serving on the County Health Aid Board and being employed by the National Animal Disease Lab in Ames and in the office of Ames City Assessor. She was a volunteer at the Marshalltown Soldiers’ Home and chairperson of Judges Board of Elections in Story County.

Wilma and Kermit retired and moved to the Regency Independent Living Residence in Nevada in 1997, where she held offices in their HOA and was an active volunteer in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

She transferred her membership to Nevada Christian Church and loved music, sewing, reading, entertaining, her church, her dear friends and family.

She is survived by one daughter, Karen (K. Lea) and husband, Fred Bookey, of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; her only grandchild, Eric Bookey; and great-granddaughter, Brighten, of Iowa Hill, Calif. She will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Mary Cox, of Zearing; her beloved husband, Kermit, who passed away in 2001; one sister, Delores Herr; and four brothers, Wallace, Orley, Howard and Harland Cox.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilma H. Helland Memorial Fund, 1249 Terracina Drive, El Dorado Hills, CA, 95762.

Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing is in charge of arrangements.
