Maxwell, IA 50161James "Jim" Harmon, 94, of Maxwell, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, March 5, 2010 at Mill Pond Retirement Home in Ankeny.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, March 13, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in Maxwell. Visitation will be 6:30 8:00 PM Friday at the Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell Interment will be in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery at 1:30 PM.
Jim was born October 2, 1915, in a country farmhouse north of Maxwell, Iowa, the son of Samuel "Jay" and Bertha (Blumenstein) Harmon. He graduated from Maxwell High School in 1933, where he had played football and baseball. He was a farmer most of his life and also worked at Iowa State University and Solar Aircraft Factory in Des Moines.
On May 7, 1935, Jim married Geneva "Jean" Pierce. They lived in the Bondurant, Maxwell, Collins areas and were members of the Loring United Methodist Church.
Jim was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed hunting pheasants, quail and morel mushrooms. Family gatherings always included playing card games and Scrabble. Until recently, Jim and Jean always challenged each other to a game of Scrabble after breakfast each day.
The couple enjoyed traveling and visiting family and friends. Their trips took them to most all the 50 states, Canada, Mexico, the Holy Land, Egypt, China and many other European countries.
Those left to cherish Jim's memory include his loving wife of almost 75 years, Jean; two sons: Jerry (Joyce) Harmon of Maxwell; Richard "Dick" of Mingo; two daughters: Linda (Harold) Laughlin of Columbia, Missouri; Patty (Jim) Titus of Eldora, Iowa; 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one son, James Jay.
The family has respectfully requested that memorials be made to Iowa Hospice of Central Iowa and Mill Pond Retirement Home in Ankeny.
