Duward (Dewey) Melvin Engstrom, 77, passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at his home in La Feria, Texas. A memorial service will be March 27, in La Feria, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery near Stratford at a later date.

Dewey was born Feb. 17, 1933, in Webster City, to Melvin and Arlene (Erickson) Engstrom. He grew up in the Stratford and Stanhope area, graduating from Stanhope High School. Following graduation, he married Joye Krumm and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his discharge from the Army, he farmed and began driving truck for Hove Truck Line, Diamond Transportation and Mathre Trucking. He also was co-owner of E & E Construction.

Dewey moved to La Feria, Texas, in 1980, where he continued driving truck and running a lawn care service until his retirement. On Dec. 10, 1994, he married Cindy Goss. He was a longtime member of the La Feria American Legion Post 439 where he served as commander for three terms and held numerous other offices. He enjoyed his family, fishing, NASCAR racing and the Dallas Cowboys.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy; one son, Dan (Lana), of Story City; one daughter, Cindy O’Brien, of Ankeny; two stepdaughters, Stephanie (O.J.) Darrow, of Aubrey, Texas, and Tiffany Goss, of McKinney, Texas; one sister, Doris (Les) Mathre, of Story City; four grandchildren, Jamie and Zach Engstrom and Nikki and Lexxi O’Brien; and three stepgrandchildren, Luke and Taylor Darrow and Jackson Goss.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Hurley Krumm.
