THREE DEATHS IN PAST WEEK

HOVLAND DIED SUDDENLY - OTHER DEATHS FOLLOW ILLNESS

Three deaths have occurred in town during the last few days. Mrs. O. J. Jacobson died Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Clara Thompson passed away Sunday night, and yesterday forenoon T. K. Hovland died suddenly at his home.

Mrs. Jacobson had been ill for a number of years and her condition had been critical the last two weeks.

Mrs. Thompson had been in ill health for several months and some time ago had an operation performed for the removal of a goiter. It was found that there was a cancerous growth, which later caused her death. She was 47 years old. The funeral is being held this afternoon in Salem church.

Mr. Hovland had been in his usual health and yesterday morning was out working in his garden. When his daughter, Miss Ora Hovland, came into the kitchen about ten o'clock, she found her father slumped over in a sitting position on the floor. She immediately went to neighbors for help and they found that he was already dead. An acute heart attack is thought to have been the cause of his death.

THREE FUNERALS HELD LAST WEEK

LAST RITES FOR ROLAND RESIDENTS CONDUCTED AT LOCAL CHURCHES

Funeral services were held here last week for three Roland residents. Mrs. O. J. Jacobson was buried on Tuesday from Bergen church, Mrs. Clara Thompson on Wednesday and T. K. Hovland on Saturday from Salem church.

Mrs. Clara Thompson

Mrs. Clara Thompson, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. R. K. Gaard, was born in Roland April 14, 1885, and lived in Roland her whole life. She attended the Roland schools and was graduated with the Class of 1901. For several years she was employed as a clerk at the S. J. Michaelson store and by her courteous and pleasant manner won a host of friends.

She was united in marriage to Mr. Oscar T. Thompson on June 19, 1907, to which union two children were born, Argyll and Maxine, who are left to mourn the passing of their mother. Mr. Thompson passed away September 7, 1921.

For the past year Mrs. Thompson has not been well and several months ago submitted to an operation for the removal of a goiter, in the hopes to regain her health. She apparently made a recovery, but the disease had made inroads so far that all the medical aid and loving care could do, were of no avail. She was able to be up and around the home until about a week before the final summons came, calling her to her reward. She passed away about midnight May 15, 1932, at the age of 47 years, one month and one day, surrounded by her immediate family. Besides her two children, she is survived by two brothers, Dr. R. R. Gaard of Radcliffe, and Homer Gaard of Garden City, and a number of other relatives.

Funeral services were held from the home at 1:30 o'clock and at 2:00 o'clock from the Salem church on Wednesday, May 18, her pastor, Rev. Olaf Holen preaching the funeral sermon. Special music was furnished by the Ladies Chorus, of which the diseased had been a member, and a solo by Miss Grizelda Morse. The pall bearers were E. K. and O. M. Thompson, E. N. Waugh, J. V. Rasmusson, Joseph Hoversten and J. E. Michaelson. Interment took place in the Roland cemetery beside her husband.

Mrs. Thompson was prominent in social and church activities of the community, for many years having taken an active part in the choir, Sunday school, and Ladies Aid society of the church in which she held membership. In her passing, she will be sorely missed in these activities as well as in the home where her place is now left vacant.

Those from out of town in attendance at the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. I. G. Grindem, Ingvald Aske, B. M. Rasmusson, Micas Henderson, and L. Chelly of Story City; Mrs. E. R. Grove, Misses Josephine Evenson and Sylvia Thompson, and E. J. Hoversten of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. Martin Varland, Mrs. Berve, and Mrs. J. J. Brekke of Radcliffe; Mrs. Otto Fenton of Jewell; Mrs. J. S. Thompson of McCallsburg; Mr. and Mrs. John Aske of Blairsburg; Roy Aske of Randall, and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Rasmusson of Nevada, besides the immediate families.
