THREE DEATHS IN PAST WEEK

HOVLAND DIED SUDDENLY - OTHER DEATHS FOLLOW ILLNESS

Three deaths have occurred in town during the last few days. Mrs. O. J. Jacobson died Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Clara Thompson passed away Sunday night, and yesterday forenoon T. K. Hovland died suddenly at his home.

Mrs. Jacobson had been ill for a number of years and her condition had been critical the last two weeks.

Mrs. Thompson had been in ill health for several months and some time ago had an operation performed for the removal of a goiter. It was found that there was a cancerous growth, which later caused her death. She was 47 years old. The funeral is being held this afternoon in Salem church.

Mr. Hovland had been in his usual health and yesterday morning was out working in his garden. When his daughter, Miss Ora Hovland, came into the kitchen about ten o'clock, she found her father slumped over in a sitting position on the floor. She immediately went to neighbors for help and they found that he was already dead. An acute heart attack is thought to have been the cause of his death.

Annie Jacobson was born September 3, 1858, at Lisbon, Ill., her parents being the late Claus and Dorthea Jacobson. She came to Story county with her parents in 1865, making the trip overland in covered wagons, and settled on a farm two miles southwest of Roland. The country was sparsely settled at that time. She was some years later confirmed by Rev. N. Amlund in the St. Petri church a mile east of Story City where the people of this community attended services.

She was united in marriage to Ole J. Jacobson, November 9, 1877, it being a double wedding, unusual in that Mr. Jacobson's sister and Mrs. Jacobson's brother, the late Anne Jacobson and Jacob C. Jacobson, constituted the other couple to be joined in wedlock. The ceremony was performed in Bergen Lutheran church in Roland by Rev. C. B. Jacobson.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Jacobson lived on a farm six miles south of Roland until 1893, when they moved to Roland. They lived in town for two and a half years, when they bought a farm a mile west of town. They lived on this place until 1910, when they built a residence in Roland where they have lived until the present time.

Three children were born to this couple, one of which died in infancy, and a daughter, Bertha, died January 14, 1909 at the age of 30 years. One son is living, Carl J. Jacobson, who resides on the Jacobson farm west of town. She is also survived by five grandchildren and one great grandchild, and a brother, T. C. Jacobson of this place.

Mrs. Jacobson was one of the older residents of the community, having lived here for 67 years. She was a member of Bergen Lutheran church since its organization and was an active worker in the Ladies Aid society until her health failed her and she was forced to remain at her home. She was taken ill with creeping paralysis and has been an invalid the last eight years being unable to move her limbs. During these years she has been under the constant care of her aged husband, who is now 81 years old, until six weeks ago when Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Jacobson moved in with them and assisted in her care. The last two weeks her condition was critical and she died at 3:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 11 days.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the residence and at Bergen church, Rev. M. O. Sumstad officiating, with interment in the Roland cemetery. The pall bearers were nephews of the deceased who live in this community, M. O., C. E., M. J., G. E., and Arthur J. Rod, and Otis Teig.

Among those from out of town in attendance at the funeral were Mrs. Walter Carson and Thomas Jacobson of Forest City, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Sandvig of Thor, Mr. and Mrs. Selmer Thorsbakken, Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Teig and J. O. Anderson of Story City, and Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Lueck and children of Randall.
