THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, March 4, 2010.

William J. “Bill” Thies, 80, of Ames, passed away Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, surrounded by his family and loved ones. A gathering of family and friends will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. A reception will follow at American Legion Post 37 in Ames. Burial will be at a later date in Rosehill Cemetery in Clark, S.D.

William J. Thies was born Aug. 24, 1929, in Clark, S.D., to William G. and Marie (Benter) Thies. He married Joyce Mitchell on June 24, 1951. To this union were born four daughters, Charla, Holly, Melody and Tobi.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 37.

Throughout his career, he farmed, assisted his father in construction, was employed by Transit Homes and retired from CyRide. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and cooking.

He is survived by his daughters, Charla (Ken) Schenck, of Sacramento, Calif., Holly (Mark) Anderson, of Dublin, Calif., and their daughter, Tomel Cooper, Melody (Peter) Olsson Bierhuis, of Danville, Calif., and their children, Lauren and Chanel Olsson and Sylvia and Alex Bierhuis, and Tobi Thies, of Patterson; former wife, Joyce Thies, of Ames; two sisters, Martha Mitchell, of Clark, S.D., and Dorothy (Jim) Linderer, of Watertown, S.D.; and sister-in-law, Barbara Thies, of Nampa, Idaho

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lloyd Thies; one brother in-law, Arthur Mitchell; and one son in-law, Michael Olsson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Ames American Legion Post 37, 225 Main St., Ames, IA, 50010.
