David Ballard Sr., 91, of Ames, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames, with visitation one hour prior to the service.

David Neal Ballard Sr., 91, of Ames, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Adams Funeral Home.
David Neal Ballard Sr. was born Feb. 9, 1919, in Ames, to Walter and Mary Jane (Hardesty) Ballard. He was a graduate of Ames High School in 1937 and attended G.M.I.T. Flint, Mich. David was a superintendent of transportation at Iowa State University.
He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater 1944 and 1945 and during the Korean Conflict served in Korea 1950 and 1951, receiving two Bronze Stars, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, United Nation Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He married Maxine Peterson on Dec. 22, 1939, in the Christian Church parsonage in Nevada.
He was a member of American Legion Post 37. David enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, the outdoors and feeding the birds and deer.
Survivors include his daughter, Sally (Gary) Faevel, of Kimberling City, Mo.; son, David Jr. (Joan), of Ames; brother, Morris (Jake) Ballard, of Garden City, Calif.; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; special friends, Karen and Gary Feakes; and dog, Tricksi.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine; and brothers, Don and Fred.
