THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, February 16, 2010.

John W. Hamilton, 86, of Story City, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010, at Bethany Manor in Story City. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Bethany Manor Chapel, 212 Lafayette Ave., in Story City.

John was born April 30, 1923, at Plymouth Township, Plymouth County, to John and Loca Hamilton. He married Jean Gist June 16, 1945, in Madison, S.D. The couple lived in several Iowa communities, including rural Sioux City, Greene, Britt, Iowa Falls and Radcliffe. He worked in the farm implement business and later sold insurance. The couple had four children, Nancy, Laura, Timothy and Colleen. Jean died Dec. 19, 1998. John eventually became a resident of Bethany Manor in Story City after suffering a massive stroke in June 2004 and lived there for the remainder of his life.

He is survived by three daughters, Nancy Spiess, of Ames, Laura Hamilton, of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Colleen Hamilton, of Ames; one son, Timothy (Karen) Hamilton, of Alburnett; four grandchildren, Tory (Eva) Spiess and Tanya Spiess, of Ames, Jahan Hamilton, of Iowa City, and Anjali Hamilton, of Alburnett; two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Katelynne Spiess; and one sister-in-law, Sylvia Gist, of Lamberton, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother; two sisters; one sister-in-law; three brother-in-laws; one niece; one nephew; and son-in-law.
