Richard (Dick) Waugh, 82, retired business man of Hampton, passed away Thursday January 7, 2010. Memorial. Services were held Monday, January 11, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Hampton United Methodist Church in Hampton with the Rev. Dr. Edward R. Peterson officiating.

Richard was born on a farm near Radcliffe in Hamilton County, Iowa, on June 30, 1927. He was the son of Eric N. Waugh and Celia G. Rierson/Waugh. He was baptized and confirmed in the Salem Lutheran Church in Roland, Iowa. He grew up and helped on his parents farm and graduated from Roland High School.

Richard was a cook in the National Air Guard 132nd Medical Group out of Des Moines, based in Bangor, Maine.

He married Verla Beggs of Hubbard, Iowa, on November 25, 1951. The couple purchased the Hampton Restaurant in 1959, moving their family to Hampton in 1960, changing the restaurant name to The Skandia Inn and opening another in 1971, in Grundy Center, Iowa. He was the owner of Dick's Apco carwash in Hampton. In 1980 Richard became a partner with his son, Mark, in purchasing the Windsor Theatre.

Richard served on the Hampton School Board from 1970 to 1976. He was involved in the Hampton Lions Club, was president, and from 1969 to 1970, he served as District Governor.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hampton.

Living family members include: his wife, Verla of Hampton; his children, Mark (Cathy) Waugh of Emmetsburg, Gloria (David) Nutt of Shawnee, Kansas, Julie (Kevin) Briden of Waterloo and Joy Koch of Coralville; nine grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; eleven step-great-grandchildren; his brother, William (Manita) Waugh of Radcliffe; his half-sister, Betty Quam of Ames; numerous nieces and nephews and his puppy dogs Mindy and Ziggy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and half-brother Bud.
