Francis Joseph Oppold, 91, of Iowa Falls, died Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls. Mass of the Resurrection was at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at St. Mark Catholic Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in St. Mark Catholic Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls is in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.
Francis was born March 13, 1918, in Ackley, the son of Robert and Gertrude (Lamm) Oppold. He graduated from high school in Ackley, Ellsworth Community College, and Iowa State. He married Nora (Peggy) Kathryn O’Reilly on Oct. 24, 1943, in Berkeley, Calif. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, and retired from farming. He was a member St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Port Charlotte, Fla., St. Mark Catholic Church in Iowa Falls, Knights of Columbus, and the Iowa Falls Elks Club B.P.O.E. No. 1674. He was a lay mission witness, cursillo, and Eucharistic minister.
He is survived by his wife, Nora (Peggy); his children, Patricia Knust (Glenn), of Grand Island, Neb., Thomas Oppold (Kate), of Toledo, Ohio, Mary Bruzdzinski (Joe), of Naperville, Ill., Mark Oppold (Kathi), of Overland Park, Kan., Francis Oppold Jr. (Fran), of Ames, Phil Oppold (Lois), of Iowa Falls, Nora A’Bell, of Urbandale, and Joan Gray (Jack), of Johnston; 28 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren with four more on the way; two sisters, Evelyn Lawless and Ruth Scallon, both of Iowa Falls; and two brothers, Joe Oppold and Robert Oppold, both of Waterloo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Andrew Oppold in 1992; and three brothers, Melvin, James and Edmund Oppold.
