Gladys Fern Thorson, 95, of Story City died October 23, 2009 at her home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial was in the Zion Cemetery in rural Garden City. Visitation was Monday, October 26th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.
Gladys was born July 9, 1914 to Cernal and Selma (Olson) Knutson near Radcliffe, Iowa. Gladys graduated from Radcliffe High School and married Cyrus Thorson on June 16, 1943. He died Feb. 12, 1955. Gladys moved to Story City in 1955 and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She worked for Story City Cleaners and Bethany Manor. Family was very important to her.
Gladys is survived by two daughters, Sharon Moore of Ames, Iowa and Lois (Roger) Oakland of Story City; seven grandchildren, Kevin Moore, Marcus (Rebecca) Moore, Lisa (Jeffrey) Wiese, Dan (Mayumi) Oakland, Paul (Jessica) Oakland, Rachel (Ben) Winecoff, and Sara (Joe) Leto; eight great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; two sisters, Ardyce Bishop of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Doris (Max) Lewis of Wellman, Iowa; and one brother, Jordan Knutson of Tucson, Arizona.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cyrus; an infant brother, Virgil Knutson; son-in-law, Gary Moore; two brothers, Reuben Knutson and Cyrus Knutson; and a sister, Amy Ritland.
Memorials may be made to Immanuel-Lutheran Church.
