THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, October 27, 2009.

Norma J. Lewis, 76, of Ames, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A gathering of friends and family will be from 3 to 7 p.m., with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 30, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way in Ames. A celebration of life memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at First Christian Church in Ames, with burial in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Norma was born Feb. 19, 1933, in Hampton, the daughter of Milton and Myrtle (Miller) Pyle. She graduated from high school and then went to Hamilton Business College in Mason City and attended a year of nursing school before she married Bennie Lewis on April 6, 1952, in Spokane, Wash. The couple moved from Hampton, then Nevada, before moving to Ames in 1976. She was employed at Bourne’s before working at Iowa State University for the College of Engineering and later Veterinary Medical Research as an administrative assistant.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Ames. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, baking, crafts, Iowa State men’s basketball and square dancing. Norma and Bennie belonged to several square dance clubs — Colo Red Hot’s, Nevada Twirlers, Ames Cross Trailers, Double R Square and Holiday Square. They also were members of the Story County Nomads.

She is survived by her husband, Bennie Lewis, of Ames; her children, Kathi Hartwig, of Davenport, Steve (Patti) Lewis, of Ames, and Karen (John) Howerton, of Collins; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.
