THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, October 20, 2009.

Gleda Mae Hanson, 74, of Nevada, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at First United Methodist Church, 1036 Seventh St., in Nevada, with Pastor Kevin Leveck officiating. Burial will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth St., in Nevada.

Gleda was born Jan. 18, 1935, in Story County, to Lafe and Pauline (Hutt) Beal. She married Max Whitaker and to the union was born a son, Ardee, and a daughter, Rhonda. On July 29, 1972, she married Virgil Hanson. She was employed at Donnelley’s and Story County Hospital, and retired from Iowa State University in the food service department. She was a member of the Coachman’s Club.

She is survived by her husband, Virgil L. Hanson, of Nevada; one son, Ardee (Lisa) Whitaker, of Colo; one daughter, Rhonda Melton (Dean Schoppe), of Nevada; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Shawn Hanson, of Nevada; and a step-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son, Douglas Whitaker, in 1956.

A memorial fund has been established in Gleda’s name.
