Merle Hemnes, 94, of Stanhope, died Sept. 19, 2009 at Crestview Manor in Webster City. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City. Burial will be in the Roland Cemetery.

Merle was born Oct. 7, 1914 in Roland to Magnus and Frances (Anderson) Hemnes. He was a WW II veteran serving in France and Germany as a tank driver; during which time he was awarded five Bronze Stars.

He farmed near Stanhope for many years. In 2003 he moved to Crestview Manor in Webster City.
He is survived by a sister, Myrtle Peterson of Salem, Oregon.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Floyd, Fred and Andrew and two sisters, Esther Christian and Abby Thompson.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
