In Howard township on March 3rd 1878 of Pneumonia, Mrs. Maria Sheffield.
The deceased was one of the oldest settlear in this part of Story county. She was born in the State of New York and lived in Wayne county of that State till about when with her husband N. N. Sheffield she removed to Illinois and settled near Aurora living there till about 1854 when again they took tip their westward march and settled in Story county in Howard township where she resided till her death.
She was noted for her genial disposition and kindness to all, and especially to those in, adversity, distress or sickness, and to aid the deserving was her especial delight.
The community in which she lived has lost any esteemed and worthy member; her children, a kind, considerate, and affectionate mother, whose loss they keenly feel, yet they sorrow not as "those having no hope," for during the past twenty-two years she has been so consistent member of the Episcopal church having received into the membership of that church by the late Rt. Rev. Bishop Lee. But an hour before her death she expressed the fullest confidence of eternal salvation through the blood of the Savior.
The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Gordon of Nevada.
