Marynelle Hay Larsen, 94, passed away Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, in Madrid. The family will be present for the visitation at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, which will be immediately followed by a funeral service at 3:30 p.m., at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth St., in Nevada. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
Marynelle was born Feb. 28, 1915, in Greenville, Ga., to Mary (McLaughlin) and Clarence Hay. After her father died, her mother married her stepfather, Ernest Porch (Preacher). Marynelle played basketball, and was the high point star of Georgia in high school. She then went on to Georgia State College for Women and continued to play basketball.
After graduating, she worked in Atlanta, and on Feb. 14, 1943, married Aubrey Larsen, a veterinarian from Wisconsin who was working in Greenville. They moved to Auburn, Ala., where their three children were born, and where she worked as an administrative secretary at the Auburn University Research Foundation. In 1961, they moved to Nevada when Dr. Larsen was transferred to the NADL in Ames, and Marynelle worked at ISU for the Dean of the Graduate School.
Marynelle loved her family, her dog Albie, playing bridge, social events, watching ISU and Auburn University football games, and surrounding herself with beautiful things. She was a member of American Business Women’s Association, Wa-Tan-Ye, Indian Creek Country Club and St. Ann’s Circle.
She is survived by her children, Ted Larsen, of Spencer, Wayne Larsen, of Nevada, and Kay (Kent) Hines, of Johnston; four grandchildren, Lana (Trey) Strong, Eric Hines, Debbie (Doug) Downey and Audra (Mike) Dobis; nine great-grandchildren, Jerra, Lauren and Logan Strong, Nick Hines, Avery, Jax and Allie Downey, and Brennan and Grayson Dobis; nieces and nephews; close family friend, Diane Moore; and many friends from Nevada and Ballard Creek in Huxley, where she had lived the last two years.
Marynelle was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather; her husband on Feb. 19, 1994; grandson, Al Larsen on Aug. 30, 2003; and two brothers, Bill and Frank Hay.
A memorial fund for Marynelle has been established.
